About the role
Grafana Labs is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to lead technical projects for Tempo, its open-source distributed tracing backend, covering ingestion, storage, querying, and metrics generation. This fully remote role focuses on reliability, performance, APIs, and operations while contributing through design, reviews, and shipped code.
What you’ll do
Lead technical projects and component ownership across ingestion, storage, querying, and metrics generation
Improve reliability, performance, APIs, and operations
Design, deliver, and operate complex multi-month projects
Break complex problems into short feedback loops including MVP delivery and iteration
Contribute through design docs, reviews, and shipped code
Own production services and reduce toil
What you’ll need
Track record delivering complex multi-month projects spanning design, delivery, and operations
Hands-on experience building and operating distributed data systems in production
Owned production services, carried a pager, and treated SLOs as a product feature
Experience with tracing, OpenTelemetry, or large-scale observability systems
Experience in a fully remote, globally distributed team
