About the role
Applied Systems seeks a Principal Data Engineer to define the architectural foundation for data and analytics, including AI-enabled workflows and large-scale data platforms. The role combines hands-on building with mentoring engineers and setting standards for data quality, governance, and observability.
What you’ll do
Define large-scale data architecture decisions for batch/streaming, warehouses, and lakehouses
Architect observability, alerting, and incident-response frameworks for data pipelines
Define standards for data quality, lineage, access control, cataloging, and governance
Design data modeling standards across OLTP/warehouse, streaming, and AI/vector use cases
Define patterns for AI-enabled workflows and enable adoption at scale
Mentor and grow engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and technical guidance
What you’ll need
15+ years in software/data engineering or architecture with outstanding impact
Degree in Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and experience
Expert knowledge of data architecture principles and best practices
Hands-on builder experience actively coding, testing, and validating architecture at scale
Proven ability to influence without authority
Excellent communication skills and ability to explain complex problems clearly
